An alleged hacker sought ransom payment from Optus in exchange for 10,000 customer records. The hacker leaked personal customer information including names, dates of birth, email addresses, passport numbers, and Australian federal and government email addresses, among other information. On late Tuesday, the hacker apologised for leaking personal information. It is still unclear how many parties were involved in the breach and whether the alleged hacker obtained customer data. The attorney general, Mark Dreyfus, stated that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) assisted Australian authorities with the investigation process.
