A coalition of 11 international press freedom, journalism, and human rights groups condemned the suppression of online and offline press freedom in Turkey following a 4 day visit to Turkey. The coalition strongly criticised the new social media law for strengthening the already rampant online and offline censorship in Turkey. The coalition cautioned that the Turkish courts and regulatory bodies lack the necessary independence to avoid the abuse of the regulation, which came into effect this month, could potentially serve as a new tool to suppress online dissidents.
