Network Modernization: a TDM to IP Solution

Sep, 04, 2018 Hi-network.com

Network operators are struggling to manage their aging SONET/SDH infrastructure, much of which has exceeded its intended life span but continues to be an important source of revenue. The expertise to service the equipment is scarce, it is difficult to find cards when they break, and repairs can take days or even weeks, potentially affecting your customers.

A recent Nemertes Research Report shows that as recently as 2018, 72% of companies still have TDM infrastructure in place. This is a result that for years, operators had few cost-effective architectural options for network modernizationwhich aligned to existing operational processes.

Fortunately, circuit emulation (CEM) has emerged as a means of circuit-to-packet migration, though many operators may not be aware of its scalability or its benefits yet. Circuit emulation provides a "book-ended" architecture for TDM-to-IP migration, in which conventional SONET/SDH equipment transmits and receives TDM traffic at the two end-points, but the entire network between those end-points is untouched.  A TDM-to-packet migration scenario using circuit emulation is where a CEM-capable layer 2/3 switch/router receives a private line transmission at the end-point, encapsulates the data using CEM, and transmits the data as packets through an Ethernet, MPLS, or IP network. Another CEM-capable layer 2/3 switch/router at the receiving end-point removes the CEM encapsulation and hands off the private line data as TDM traffic to the receiving-end multiplexer.

Come participate at the upcoming Light Reading Webinar on September 13, 2018,"Network Modernization: a TDM to IP Solution"where the experts discuss how it is time to modernize your transport network with a strategy that protects existing revenue while lowering lowering opex and putting the TDM equipment on a glide-path to retirement. Our distinguished panel includes Verizon's Director of Optical Transport Network Architecture, Design and Planning,Glenn Wellbrock, detailing his own network transformation from SONET/SDH to IP.Christian Schmutzer, Cisco Principal Engineer in Optical Systems discussing how Cisco can help you also with this transition to all IP that's available today, along with our moderator Sterling Perrin, * Principal Analyst, Heavy Reading

Christian Schmutzer, Principal Engineer, Optical Systems, Cisco

Glenn Wellbrock,Director, Optical Transport Network, Architecture, Design & Planning, Verizon

Topics covered will include:

  • What are the largest pain points as operators struggle to maintain their legacy SONET/SDH networks?
  • What is circuit emulation and how can the technology be applied to the "SONET problem"?
  • Why did Verizon choose a CEM and IP/MPLS architecture and how are they implementing it today?
  • What is a practical blueprint for operators to follow as they move from TDM to IP networks?

*Attendees will receive the new Heavy Reading"Network Modernization -A TDM to IP Solution"White Paper, authored by Sterling Perring, Principal Analyst at Heavy Reading.

We look forward to seeing you there.
