Tennessee and Montana state legislatures passed a comprehensive privacy law bill on Friday, 21 April. The state senate approved a modified version of the Montana Consumer Data Privacy Act (SB 384) with a 50-0 majority vote. The Tennessee Information Protection Act (HB 1181) was approved with a 29-0 majority vote. Both laws will now be placed on the desks of the corresponding governors for signature.
If passed, the Montana and Tennessee legislation would join California, Colorado, Virginia, Utah, Connecticut, Iowa, and Indiana as the eighth and ninth states with comprehensive privacy laws. Additionally, Washington State established a privacy law with broad definitions to cover other categories of data (sometimes considered health data), even if it only formally applies to health information.
