Democratic Reps. Anna Eshoo and Zoe Lofgren announced the introduction to Congress of the Online Privacy Act, a new privacy bill proposing to create a federal agency to protect privacy rights. According to CNBC, the new bill includes the creation of the Digital Privacy Agency (DPA), which would be funded for up to 1,600 employees and could impose damages up to the same maximum amount as the FTC, which is$42,530 per incident. The representatives indicated it will not pre-empt state law, and would impose limit on data collection and use by companies.
