A seven-member delegation from the European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee is embarking on a visit to Japan from 15 to 19 May. The delegation aims to explore issues related to the advancement of digital products and services, specifically artificial intelligence (AI), and understand Japan's approach to tech regulation.

During their stay in Tokyo, the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will discuss with Japanese Ministers Taro Kono and Takeaki Matsumoto topics such as AI, digital regulation, and combating online disinformation. They will also meet with representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and leading tech companies like Panasonic, Nec, and Fujitsu.

In Kyoto, the delegation will focus on the legal aspects of AI applications, engaging with academics from Kyoto University. They will also meet with manufacturers Omron and Horiba to gain insights into innovative developments and challenges in the field of AI, particularly in the medical sector. Discussions will cover Japan's new Economic Security Promotion Act and its recent law on cybersecurity.

The visit is aimed at fostering an exchange of positions, information, and collaboration opportunities between Japan and the European Union. The insights gained from these discussions should inform the European Parliament's ongoing work on the Artificial Intelligence Act, the Single Market Emergency Instrument, and the implementation of the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act.
