Facebook announced an expansion of the 2Africa subsea cable network by four more branches to serve the African continent and Middle East region from 2023 with 21 landings in 16 African countries. Facebook is collaborating with the 2Africa consortium which includes China Mobile International, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, STC, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and WIOCC. The new cable branches are Seychelles, the Comoros Islands, Angola and the south-eastern part of Nigeria joining the recently announced extension to the Canary Islands. With Covid-19, more and more people are relying on the internet for communications and as a part of economic recovery, investments in subsea cable infrastructure are very critical at this time.
