This article covers the steps to turn off Windows 11 Copilot chat windows. It also explains how to stop Copilot from sticking next to apps when you don't want it to.
The methods for turning off Copilot work in a very similar way to the steps for closing other apps and software in Windows 11. The easiest way to close Copilot is to click theCloseicon that looks like anXin the upper-right corner of the screen.
Alternatively, you can also close Copilot by clicking its app icon in the lower-right corner of the screen at the right end of the taskbar. The Copilot app icon looks like two rectangles with a rainbow gradient.
You can also use a keyboard shortcut to open and close Copilot in Windows 11. Some modern (2024 and later) Microsoft keyboards also have a designated Copilot key.
All Windows 11 users with any type of keyboard can activate or deactivate Copilot by using theWindows key+Ckeyboard shortcut.
If your computer keyboard has the designated Copilot key, tap it to activate or close Copilot.
One convenient feature of Microsoft's Copilot is its ability to stick to the right side of another app so that you can interact with it without having to switch back and forth. For example, you can use the AI tool for research or ideas while typing an email.
However, Copilot's side-by-side feature can be frustrating if you or someone else has accidentally activated it and you want your primary app to fill the whole screen as usual. Fortunately, you can close the side-by-side setting rather easily and quickly.
To quit Copilot's side-by-side mode, click theside-by-sideicon. This icon looks like a square with a black vertical stripe on its right side. It's just to the left of theCloseicon.
Copilot is a first-party Microsoft app that comes built into the Windows 11 operating system, so getting rid of it isn't as simple as just uninstalling an app. Having said that, there are ways to both remove Copilot from the taskbar and uninstall Copilot from Windows completely for those who don't intend to ever use it or simply want more space on their taskbar.
