Ride-hailing drivers called on Uber and Lyft for more protection against violence after the murder of a driver in Chicago. The drivers' representative organization Independent Drivers Guild Chicago is asking the tech companies to require passengers to upload a photo of their identity cards to their accounts and to upload a 'selfie' before starting a trip. In addition, drivers claim that the installation of a voice-activated panic button would help them to alert the policy when they are violently attacked by passengers. Even though passengers are encouraged to upload a photo to their accounts on these platforms, they are not obliged to in order to use the services. Drivers have been harassed, battered and assaulted on a regular basis, according to the Legal Rideshare law firm.
