US regulator introduces new rules to combat cell phone account scams

11 juil. 2023 Hi-network.com

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed regulations to protect consumers from cell phone account hijacking scams, preserving their freedom to choose devices and providers. These rules would require wireless providers to authenticate customers during SIM card swaps and port-out requests, effectively preventing fraudulent activities that compromise phone numbers and personal information. The aim is to safeguard customers from potential harm and maintain the integrity of their phone accounts. According to Jessica Rosenworcel, chair of the FCC, the new regulations will uphold the 'well-established freedom of citizens to pick their preferred device and provider.'
