Ahead of elections in Zambia, several internet users have reported disruptions of WhatsApp and other social media. Access restrictions were introduced by networks including state-owned Zamtel, Airtel Zambia, Liquid Telecom and MTN. Service disruptions come after the government announced that it was going to shut down the internet in case Zambians 'failed to use the cyberspace during this year's election correctly'. Similar measures have been adopted by other African countries during elections including Cameroon, Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, Guinea, Togo, Benin, Mali and Mauritania.
