PTA and UNESCO collaborate to bridge the digital gender gap in Pakistan

23 août 2023 Hi-network.com

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has joined forces with UNESCO to create a comprehensive 'Digital Gender Inclusion Strategy' as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce the digital gender gap in the country. This collaborative strategy aims to enhance internet usage, cell phone adoption, and digital skills among females in Pakistan. The initiative aligns with the guidelines the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) set forth for 2030.

The proposed strategy includes a range of actions and measures for PTA and its key partners to improve women's digital access, connectivity, and affordability. Through this joint effort, PTA and its collaborators strive to foster collaboration and bridge the digital gender gap prevalent in Pakistan.

In 2022, PTA initiated the data collection and analysis process, which involved expert surveys conducted by national and international digital and gender experts, physical surveys targeting the unconnected population, and IVR surveys targeting mobile users. Additionally, PTA organized workshops in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta. The finalized strategy will be unveiled after receiving validation from stakeholders.

Why does it matter?

This collaboration between PTA and UNESCO demonstrates a shared commitment to gender equality and digital inclusion. The strategy's core objective is to empower women by improving their access to digital resources and skills. By tackling the digital gender gap, this initiative has the potential to significantly impact the lives of women in Pakistan, enabling them to fully participate in the digital era.
