Twitter has hinted that it would quit a voluntary EU code of practice to tackle disinformation, according to an EU official. However, in practice, it will not significantly affect the current situation, as the company has not put much effort in that direction recently. According to the EU official, this doesn't mean it would pull out of Europe.
The new attitude towards the agreement also comes from recent changes to the code. Last year, the European Commission strengthened the code, requiring companies to submit regular progress reports with data on how much advertising revenue they had averted from disinformation actors. The new obligations include providing information on the number or value of political advertisements accepted or rejected and instances of manipulative behaviours detected.
Some companies that signed up to the code are Google, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok.
