The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Indonesian Internet Domain Registry (PANDI) have announced plans to work on the digitalisation of indigenous scripts of Indonesia through the initiative called 'Connecting the Nation through Ancient Character Digitalisation'.

Indonesia has 718 languages, but most do not have substantial online presence apart from the national language Bahasa written in Latin alphabet. Through the initiative, UNESCO and PANDI plan to register at least seven indigenous scripts including Sunda, Jawa, Rejang, Batak, Pegon, Lontara, and Kawi at UNICODE hoping to increase linguistic diversity on the Internet.
