The Nigerian parliament is considering a new ICT tax, which consists of a proposed 9% tax on consumers of communication services, on top of the 5% VAT on purchasing communication services, 12% import duties on ICT devices, and 20% tax on SIM cards. According to the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), the tax would 'prevent over 50 million Nigerians from being able to afford basic broadband connection'.
